Men's Soccer Falls, 4-1, at Carnegie Mellon in ECAC South Championship

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Senior forward Jonathan Browne netted a hat trick in the first 16 minutes of the game to lead Carnegie Mellon to a 4-1 victory over Gettysburg in the ECAC South Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon at Gesling Stadium. The loss ends a six-game unbeaten streak for the Bullets, who were 3-0-3 in that stretch.

Browne, the Tartans' (14-5-0) all-time leader in goals and points, headed in a header from freshman midfielder Jonathan Simon at the 1:23 mark. He connected again at 12:22 and 15:17 to give sophomore goalie Matthew Bazin all the offense he would need for the win. Bazin made five saves in just over 70 minutes before giving way to senior Robert Vargo, who allowed Gettysburg's (12-6-4) lone goal in the 80th minute.

Bullet sophomore forward Chris Bayon (Langhorne, Pa./Lawrenceville School [N.J.]) one-timed a pass from classmate Ross Witte (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus). The ball skim the underside of the crossbar and dropped in to break up the shutout.

Statistically, Gettysburg held the advantage, outshooting the Tartans 15-13 and holding a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, but it was not enough to pull off the win. Carnegie Mellon senior forward Andrew Park also tallied a goal and an assist on the day.

Both teams' seasons are now complete. Gettysburg finished fourth in the Centennial Conference in the regular season and tied both Muhlenberg and then-No. 13 Johns Hopkins in the CC playoffs. The Bullets advanced to the semifinal by defeating the Mules in a nine-round shootout, but fell there to the Blue Jays in the same fashion.
